Online payments company, Paypal, will enable customers to pay for their items in retail stores using their smartphone.

The service launches nationally today in 230 stores with four major retailers including Warehouse, Coast, Oasis and Karen Millen. The service works via an app available for Android and Apple devices. The app generates a unique barcode and transaction number which the cashier scans to take payment from your PayPal account. The app will work even when no wi-fi or mobile network signal is present.

The app is unlocked with a unique PIN number, and no personal or financial information, or money, is stored on your phone. “Safety and security are at the heart of everything PayPal does…” said Innovation Comms Manager at PayPal UK, Jon Bishop,  in a blog post.
