A recent survey of small businesses and sole traders revealed that 74% do not have a mobile version of their website.

The research was commissioned by creative software developer Serif, they polled 400 UK self-employed professionals and small business owners.

The findings showed that 74% of respondents didn’t have a mobile friendly website, however this to me isn’t the most alarming part, after all we don’t know what percentage of mobile traffic their websites are receiving, if any. The more worrying concern is that 40% don’t even know how their website appears on a smartphone or tablet, indicating they are not aware if the’re receiving mobile traffic to their website, a quick look at their analytics software could show them they are missing out on potential revenue.

“It’s essential for organisations to have a website if they want to create the right impression, engage with customers and boost business,” says Gary Bates, Managing Director at Serif. “A branded website adds perceived professionalism, which makes it one of the most effective marketing tools, and a matching mobile-ready version adds even more credibility – essential for keeping existing customers and attracting new ones. But, many do not recognise the need to create versions compatible with different devices.”

A recent report by Google suggests the UK smartphone penetration is now more than half at 51%, whilst 95% have researched a product or service on their smartphone, statistics that businesses can’t afford to ignore.
